Agree on a metric

Innovation sometimes creates conflict because different people have different priorities. If you can’t agree on a metric to innovate on, it can create a lot of problems.

Innovative thinkers inevitably have quirky personalities. We get upset about small things because we have particular views of the world. We are eccentric. We like things a certain way. Unfortunately, that’s just a product of creativity.

When you put 2 people who innovate but innovate in different ways, the likelihood of conflict is high. Most innovators don’t know the metric they innovate on. People like Steve Jobs were known as unreasonable, obnoxious, and a downright nightmare to work with. It is my theory that this was a result of Steve being incredibly innovative and particular without knowing what metrics he was using.

Communicate and agree upon the metric, and the conflict between innovators disappears.
